Elche inflicted a shocking defeat on Villarreal at the weekend to compound Quique Setien’s worries as his side have now lost in back to back games in La Liga.

On Saturday at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero, Elche put recorded an emphatic 3-1 victory against Villarreal.

The warning signs were obvious after the hosts raced to the lead inside the opening three minutes, Pere Milla with the goal. But, Villarreal responded twenty minutes later from a Gerard Moreno strike.

However, it would be Milla who would sink the Yellow Submarines on the day after he added two more in the 45+3′ and 52nd minutes, both from the penalty spot to hand his side their first win of the season.

The defeat for Setien’s men means they’ve now lost in back to back La Liga games, following the narrow 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano on January 30th.

Villarreal, however, maintain 5th spot in the standings and are only 14points off second placed Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, on the night Samuel Chukwueze played 90 minute in the game, but the winger could not impact on the game for his side.

Chukwueze was replaced on the 90th minute for Diego Collado.

Next for the Nigerian and his team, but in particular for the Manager, is a date this Sunday with La Liga leaders Barcelona at El Madrigal.

Quique Setien will have to plot the fall of his former side and avoid a hat-trick of defeats, which could scupper the team’s European chances for next season.
