Former Real Madrid attacking Midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, hailed the display of Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey for Ajax against his former side Rangers.

Calvin Bassey made a return to the Ibrox Stadium as Ajax grabbed a 3-1 victory away from home, and the 22 year-old, who was playing in front of his former fans put in a commanding display.

Although there wasn’t much to do for the most of the match as Rangers rarely threatened and when they did Bassey and Jurrien Timber dealt with the treats.

However there was a situation where Bassey reacted quickly to clear off the ball line when Fashion Sakala thought that his back post header had given Rangers the lead.

While on analytical duties with Ziggo Sports, Van der Vaart claimed Bassey had a good game and revealed the Nigerian felt at home playing away to Rangers.

He also probably suggested Bassey is more comfortable playing as a center Back.

“Ajax is much, much better. I also think Calvin Bassey plays well, he feels well at home there (in the center back).

“Maybe it’s also because Wijndal played on that side, which is a bit more dynamic.”

Given the unfair criticism Bassey has suffered, it’s not hard to understand why Bassey had a good game at the Ibrox Stadium on his return to where he called home for two seasons.

Ajax finished third to qualify for the UEFA Europa League at the Expense of Rangers who needed to win by at least a 4-goal margin to avoid crashing out after losing the first Match 3-nil at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
