U17WWC: Confidence is high, Nigeria can reach U17 final – Omamuso Edafe

Nigeria defeated the USA on penalties to advance to the semi finals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time in history.

The game ended 1-1 in regulation time before Nigeria triumphed, 4-3 on penalties against the USWYT.

Omamuso Edafe scored Nigeria’s lone goal in regular time; the full back stepped up to coolly convert a spot kick awarded after a lengthy VAR review.

She also scored the decisive penalty that sealed the fate of USA and book Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals.

The US team were dominant for large parts of the encounter and got an equaliser, and could have snatched a winner but for poor finishing.

When asked what was going through here mind during the dominant phase of the United States, Edafe claimed she was not at anytime under pressure as she believed in her abilities and also the abilities of her teammates.

“I was not under pressure, because I believed in God and I believe in my self that we are going to make Nigeria proud and we are going to make it.”

She also revealed that confidence is high for the Flamingos and they have the quality to reach the finals and bring the trophy to Nigeria.

“Yes we have the confidence to go to the finals, and to carry the Cup back to Nigeria.”
