Udinese of Italy defender, William Troost-Ekong has downplayed the import of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory against Egypt in Tuesday’s international friendly, as he says the Africa Cup of Nations hosts remain favourites to win the continental title in July, footballlive.ng reports.
Troost-Ekong got the second chance to captain Nigeria from the start in Tuesday’s game at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba and, though he admits he was thrilled to end it with victory, he insists Nigerians should not get carried away by the result.
The Holland-born stopper noted that the pitch at the Asaba stadium affected players on both sides, which also made it difficult to properly asess their performances, but footballlive.ng reports further that he reckoned further that they all gave good accounts of themselves.
The former youth team player at Tottenham Hotspur, however, stressed that it would be foolhardy to write Egypt off because of their defeat, as he says The Pharaohs’ coach, Javier Aguirre tried new players in the tie.
Troost-Ekong posited: ”Egypt is one of the favorites for the AFCON, seeing that they are playing at home.
”It is a great test for us after the game against Seychelles, try and do something better because it wasn’t the best game.
“The conditions as well, and I think the boys started well, it was a good test for us.
”On the other hand, I think you have to keep going because it is just a friendly game, they tried new players as well.”
