Much have been said about the sacking of Alfred Schreuder by Ajax and how it will affect the playing time of Calvin Bassey.
The now former gaffer stuck with the Nigerian in defense all through his brief tenure with Ajax after bringing him for a club record fee from Rangers.
Schreuder stood by him despite intense criticism from the Dutch press, former players and Pundits, questioning the defender’s ability to defend but two games into the sacking, Bassey has found himself relegated to the bench.
His exclusion from the starting line-up also coincides with an upturn in form of the Dutch giants.
Bassey only got 12 minutes of playing time in Johnny Heitinga’s first game which Ajax won 4-1 against Excelsior, but was an unused substitute in the 5-0 win against SC Cambuur.
The 23 year-old may have lost his place in the starting line-up to Owen Wijndal and Edson Alvarez.
Bassey will be worried about his lack of playing time and now faces an uphill task of convincing Heitinga and the Ajax faithfuls that he is capable of making a mark in the team.
Heitinga won’t be under pressure to play Bassey as he wont be in an hurry to change his winning side, and this may see the Nigerian relegated to the bench for a long time.
The onus however is now on Calvin Bassey to prove his worth when ever called upon and earn the right to start for Ajax.
