Newly capped Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has explained why he cried after making his debut against Brazil in an international friendly this month.
Okoye replaced Francis Uzoho, who picked up an injury, and the young goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in his first Eagles outing.
The 20 year-old explained that he never expected to play; he was an unused sub in the friendly against Ukraine.
“I thank God for the team and the opportunity I’ve played for the national side of our beloved country. I cried after the game. I shed tears when I spoke to my father and brother,” Okoye stated.
“I didn’t expect to play, I was just sitting on the bench like the last time in Ukraine and I knew I’d have to wait for my chance. I didn’t know it will come so soon but things can be like that.”he said.
The 20-year-old is likely be in goal for Nigeria in next month’s 2021 African Cup of Nations qualifiers with Benin Republic and Lesotho.
