Former Nigeria winger Emmanuel Amunike believes Nigeria can become the first African team to win the FIFA World Cup.
Amunike, who led Tanzania to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, says 2022 could be the year Africa breaks the hoodoo and Nigeria can emerge as that team.
“Whether anybody likes it or not and I repeat it, if it pleases God, that 2022 in Qatar, an African team can win a world cup or if not win it, can do something meaningful,” Amunike told footballlive.ng.
The former Barcelona man insists it will require a lot of “hard work and commitment from the player and also doing the right thing in Africa football” to enable the continent achieve such a feat.
“We can’t just achieve these by speaking too much English, we can bring a lot of people from England to see how we can develop our players in Nigeria, let’s see how we can create a balance.”
Amunike who also Coached Nigeria’s U17 team to the world cup title in 2015, argues that the Country can build on its age grade system and translate that success to the senior teams.
“If we can dominate the world in the U17 level five times, why can’t we do it in the senior level.
“I still have that believe that if we stick to and do the needful, our players needs to work hard and when we can develop this concept, preach that our players must not believe that they must have a contact, pay money to come to the national team, they must belief that for me to be in the National team I deserved it, I merit it, it is not because I know someone,” Amunike said.
“If all these things stated above are adhered to, in the nearest future Nigeria can win the world cup.
“Because, we have what it takes to win the world cup, if we can be winning the U17, let us be honest, you see we have won U17 world cup five times, and I hope the people going to this next U17 world cup in Brazil wins it for the 6th time.
“They are my colleagues we all worked together, I pray and wish them all the best and hope they can win the world cup again. A father can not say, he should be better than his son, your prayer is that, your son should be better than you,” he concluded.
