Super Eagles AFCON 2013 Winning Team, Where Are They Now?

10 years after the AFCON 2013 triumph, we look back at a squad which filled many fans with joy and excitement as they played pragmatic, yet beautiful football, under the late Stephen Keshi, a national hero, a role model to many African managers including Pitso Mosimane.

The Keshi-led boys were a hybrid of home-based talents and foreign professionals. However, it is not true, as widely believed, that the local talents made up the core of the team, as a matter of fact, only six local professionals made it to the final trim of the 2013 squad of 23.

That being addressed, where are the famous Africa Champions of 2013 now? Let’s find out.

1. Vincent Enyeama (Maccabi Tel Aviv) – Without a club, but he confirmed last year that he has been training in France, and hopes to find a club there before returning to Nigeria.

2. Joseph Yobo (Fenerbahce) – He is currently was named assistant manager of the Super Eagles in 2021, but has since left the position.

3. Elderson Echiejile (Braga) – Retired from International football, but was reported to be joining former national under 20 coach, Paul Aigbogun, in Jammerbugt FC.

4. Nwakwo Obiora (Parma on loan to Padova) – The former Inter Milan midfielder now plies his trade with Chaves in Portugal.

5. Efe Ambrose (Celtic) – He currently plays for Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship.

6. Azubuike Egwuekwe (Warri Wolves) – He was with Rivers United in 2019/2020 season, his current club is unknown at the time of this report.

7. Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow) – The Super Eagles captain currently plays in Turkey with Sivasspor.

8. Brown Ideye (Dynamo Kyiv) – Ideye moved to West Bromwich Albion in 2014, then moved to a host of football clubs across Europe and Asia. The Striker joined Kuwaiti side Al-Yarmouk in the summer of 2022.

9. Emmanuel Emenike (Spartak Moscow) – The powerful striker hung up his boots in 2019.

10. John Mikel Obi (Chelsea) – The former Super Eagles captain is now retired.

11. Victor Moses (Chelsea) – Played his first major tournament with Nigeria at the 2013 AFCON. He left Chelsea and joined Russian club Spartak Moscow.

12. Reuben Gabriel (Kano Pillars) – He was with Saudi club, Abha in 2020. He reportedly to move to Al Ain, but never made an appearance for the club.

13. Fegor Ogude (Valerenga) – The former defensive midfielder is now retired since 2020.

14. Godfrey Oboabona (Sunshine Stars) – He has been without a club since he left Georgian club Dinamo Batumi in 2020.

15 Ikechukwu Uche (Villarreal) – Well known for his acrobatic celebrations, has retired since 2019.

16. Austin Ejide (Hapoel Be’er Sheva) – The former Super Eagles second choice was with Sektzia Ness Ziona in Israel, but has been without a club since last season.

17. Ogenyi Onazi (Lazio) – The former Super Eagles midfielder recently joined Bahrain outfit, East Riffa on January 7 this year.

18. Ejike Uzoenyi (Enugu Rangers) – He currently plays for the Nigerian Premier Football League side, Enugu Rangers, after many years abroad.

19. Sunday Mba (Enugu Rangers) – The AFCON 2013 winning goal scorer has been without a club since he last appeared for Yeni Malatyaspor in Turkey back in the 2015/2016 season.

20. Nosa Igiebor (Real Betis) – The former Tel Aviv Attacking midfielder is currently without a club since leaving Anorthosis in 2018.

21. Juwon Oshaniwa (Ashdod) – Juwon is without a club since he left Akwa United in 2020.

22. Kenneth Omeruo (ADO Den Haag) – The current Super Eagles captain plies his trade with Segunda Division side, CD Leganes.

23. Chigozie Agbim (Enugu Rangers) – The third-choice goalkeeper currently plays for Delta Force FC in Nigeria.
