Stoke City boss Michael O’Neill has revealed his reason for leaving out midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo of starting XI since his return from injury.

Etebo last appeared for the Potters back in October in their 1-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, and has not made any match-day squad under Michael O’Neill after returning from his three weeks injury.

O’Neill, who replaced Nathan Jones after the latter was dismissed, insists the 24-year-old wasn’t ready and not at the level he expects him to be.

“Peter came back after, I think, four weeks out. When I came to the club, Peter was injured. He’d come back from international duty and been injured. So that was far from ideal.”

“His training has been ok, it’s been no better than ok, so that’s important.

“There’s no guarantee that anyone comes back and we put them straight in the team.

“He is not being treated any different to any other players.”

The Super Eagles midfielder has made eleven league appearances in 21 games so far this season.
