Nigerian goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi says he’s a “big goalkeeper” and will not let the constant criticisms affect his performance on the pitch.
Akpeyi, who won Bronze with Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON, has been a subject of fans backlash with his PSL side Kaizer Chiefs since his arrival at the club.
Back at home the 33 year-old’s performance is under constant scrutiny and has recently lost his place in the Super Eagles team.
On Saturday, Akpeyi justified his inclusion in Amakhosi’s PSL game against Baroka FC after first choice goalie Itumeleng Khune picked up an injury.
The Nigeria international produced a man of the match performance in Amakhosi’s 1-0 win.
After the game he told reported that his response to criticisms is putting up good performances. He also insists he has no supporter at the Club.
“I have been thrown sh*t at but there’s only one person that keeps me standing,” Akpeyi said.
“I’m a big goalkeeper. No matter [what] is being thrown at me I just have to take it and use it as a stepping stone to get to the next level – that’s the confidence I came into the field with. So, my teammates, who were actually encouraging me when I was entering the field it’s because they have confidence in me as well.
“So, I think the result works generally well for the team and thankfully we have the three points to stay on top.” He said.
