Simy Nwankwo Bombs Again… Goal Drought Hits 16 Games

Simy Nwankwo was handed some game time at the weekend in Benevento’s Serie B clash away from home against Modena.

The Forward was an unused substitute in his team’s last set of games, and back to back wins.

Benevento boss, Fabio Cannavaro is faced with the task of at least securing a playoff spot, but Sunday’s 1-1 result leaves his side four points behind the quarter-final zone.

On the day, Modena missed the chance of taking the lead, after Davide Diaw had spurned a penalty kick as early as the 8th minute of the encounter.

The visitors then took the initiative and in the 22nd minute Gennaro Acampora put Benevento ahead.

But the lead was cancelled just before the interval, Diaw making amends for his penalty miss, scoring with aplomb in the 44th minute to close the half on level pegging.

It was in the second half Simy got his chance; his 8th league appearance, and to convince Cannavaro of more game time before his loan deal expires.

However, the 30 year-old fired blanks and is now on a 16-game goal drought that stretches as far back as February with Parma.

This season, he has had no goal contribution so far at Benevento and his form in front of goal has dipped since last season.

Next up for Benevento is a home game at the Municipal Stadium Ciro Vigorito against Perugia on Boxing day.
