Selection Headache for Jose Peseiro ahead AFCON Qualifiers

The Squad list released by Jose Peseiro ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe seems almost like a breath of fresh air.

The inclusion of Victor Boniface and Gift Orban in the Super Eagles set up, especially with the latter also eligible to play for Togo, adds to the relief that the NFF contract imbroglio with Peseiro was eventually sorted.

Similarly, the prospect of seeing the new invitees in action also creates a selection headache for the coach, who will now have to choose between old guards Taiwo Awoniyi and Samuel Chukwueze and new invitees Gift Orban and Victor Boniface.

As much as the game seems inconsequential, Nigeria runs a risk of not finishing in first place should they lose and Guinea Bissau defeats Sierra Leone.

That grim probability would pitch Jose Peseiro against fans, who already perceive the Portuguese as incapable of improving the Super Eagles further.

However, it is expected that the 63 year-old will name a strong line up, which could have Victor Osimhen.

Who would partner the Qualifier’s top scorer in the Eagles attack?

The array of stars including Samuel Chukwueze, Gift Orban, Victor Boniface, and Taiwo Awoniyi pose a healthy tactical problem for the Coaches.

Samuel Chukwueze or Gift Orban

This decision will particularly be worrying as Chukwueze should start, his 13 goals and 10 assist last season with Villarreal earned him a move to AC Milan, where he has made three appearances, however, Orban is a wrecking ball and has earned his long awaited call-up to the national team.

Last campaign, Orban racked up a total of 36 goals and 2 assists for both Stabaek and Gent, and also has already found the back of the net twice this season.

Despite both players having a similar profile Chukwueze is doing it in an elite league as one can’t compare LaLiga and Serie A with the Belgian Pro League.

Victor Boniface or Taiwo Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi has a strong claim to start alongside Victor Osimhen in attack, after all the striker just saw his seven-game scoring streak halted, a casualty list that included the likes of Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal.

He’s also has 3 goals in 4 Premier League games already.

But, new invitee Victor Boniface also deserves a look in. He has been explosive since the start of the season and has followed up his last season form – 17 goals and 10 assists for Union SG – with 5 goals and 2 assists in four games to propel his new side, Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga.

Regardless of the decision Jose Peseiro makes, it is set to be an intriguing battle between the old guards and the new.
