Sadiq Umar admits struggles… Eguavoen back Forward after debut AFCON goal


Despite a difficult start in this debut Africa Cup of Nations campaign, Sadiq Umar has continued to grow in confidence and Wednesday’s goal against Guinea Bissau his first ever senior team goal for Nigeria is one of the biggest moments of his playing career now, the Forward told FL.


Sadiq converted from a Kelechi Iheanacho pass, a simple tap in but the lanky Forward was at the right the far end of the post and at the right time to give Nigeria the lead against the very stubborn opponents.
It was his first start for the team in the competition and he struggled till in the first half , prompting several outbursts from the head Coach on the side lines.
The player admits that his performance has been a source of concern, but he only worried because he believes he might need time to adapt to playing at the stage and in a big team like the Super Eagles.
Meanwhile, despite the goal, head Coach Austin Eguavoen had already lined up Peter Olayinka to replace the goal scorer.
Although he received a loud ovation as he left the pitch, Sadiq Umar was visibly shocked he get hooked, but Eguavoen insists the player is still an important member of the team.
The coach dismissed suggestions that the substitution was really a big deal.
‘I have 26 players to pick from and anybody can be replaced on the pitch, but I was impressed with  Sadiq.’
