Rivers United suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat on Sunday against Diables Noirs in Congo to start their 2023 CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The contest was decided in the first half as three goals in seven minutes condemned Rivers United to the defeat.

After 30 minutes, Carl Wunda scored the opening goal to set the tone for the hammering, and Jaures Ngombe added a second a few minutes later.

In the 35th minute, Domi Massoumou completed the rout and built an unassailable lead for the hosts.

Rivers United had their own chance from the penalty spot in what could have been a consolation or even serve as a foundation for them to possibly mount an unlikely comeback, but Ebube Duru saw his effort from 12 yards saved.

The Nigerian champions will look to put the disappointment behind them and bounce back with a positive result against ASEC Mimosas in their next group game at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, on Sunday.
