Rivers United are Champions of the 2021-2022 NPFL season and they emerged winners without having to kick a ball yet, following second placed Plateau United dropping points on Saturday.

Plateau United were 10 points behind league leaders Rivers United with four rounds of matches left this season and headed into the game in Uyo against Akwa United with the chance to still keep the title chase.
Akwa United grabbed a dramatic stoppage time winner after seeing their opening goal cancelled out by the visitors in the 2-1 victory.
Rivers United (71) are now three points away from setting a new record for points tally with 4 round of games left until the season is concluded.
Dolphins FC (Rivers State club – Defunct) held the record of winning the League title with the highest points (73) in the top flight.
The record had stood for 11 years and Stanley Eguma, who is the team’s current Head Coach, was Manager back in the 2010-2011 season.
Meanwhile, the new Champions will take on Rangers in their first game as a champion on Sunday.
