Oshoala, Mané historic night at Ballon d’Or Awards… Putellas, Benzema crowned

Africa’s Women Player of the year, Asisat Oshoala, has been ranked 16th overall among her peers in the Ballon d’Or list for 2021-22 season.

Oshoala was at the award ceremony held, Monday, in France where her Barcelona teammate Alexia Putellas was crowned yet again as the number Women’s football player.

The Nigerian won every available domestic silverware available to FC Barcelona Femeni, but the team fell short of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The 28 year-old finished as top scorer in the Spanish League, but endured a difficult run with the Nigeria Women’s national team, in the period under review.

She is also the first African Women’s footballer to make the Ballon d’Or list.

Meanwhile, Men’s Africa Player of the Year, Sadio Mané was runner up to France International, Karim Benzema who crowned a fine season with a second important individual award.

Mané became the second African to reach the final three shortlist since Liberia’s George Weah was voted winner.

The 66th Ballon d’Or awards also recognized the Senegalese star for his philanthropy back in his native Country.
