If there was one word to describe this weekend’s Nigeria Professional Football League action then it would simply be surprise.
Go Round recorded the most eye-catching result on Saturday as they drew 2-2 with Elkanemi Warriors in Maiduguri, while Niger Tornadoes continued their good form with a 0-0 draw at Bendel Insurance.
Lobi Stars left their trip to Kwara United one point better off, but it was business as usual at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium as Akwa United edged Nasarawa United 2-1.
Here, Footballlive.ng selects its Nigeria Professional Football League team of the week 17.
Charles Tambe (Lobi Stars)
The Pride of Benue shotstopper had the busiest of afternoons during his side’s 0-0 draw at Kwara United. He pulled off some important saves when called upon.
Etboy Akpan (Akwa United)
The U23 star was rewarded for arguably his performance of the season so far with a goal in the win against Nasarawa United.
Reuben Ogbonnaya (Niger Tornadoes)
The experienced defender was monstrous at the back for the Ikon Allah Boys in Benin City. He wasn’t afraid to make tackles.
Ifeanyi Anaemena (Enyimba)
Rangers huffed and puffed to get something out of their trip to Aba, but Anaemena firmly shut the door in their faces. The former Giwa FC defender grabbed a brace in the encounter.
Akobundu Ebuka (Go Round)
Gave an assured display at the back to deal with Elkanemi Warriors’ attacking threat in Saturday’s draw in Maiduguri.
Anthony Omaka (Sunshine Stars)
The slippery Omaka pulled all the strings against Wikki Tourists and capped a fine display with a goal.
Ayooluwa Adetola (Niger Tornadoes)
While the goalless draw at Bendel Insurance served as a morale booster, Ayooluwa’s dynamic presence in midfield provided plenty of inspiration.
Samuel Onukwube (Go Round)
The ever-reliable Samuel Onukwube was menacing for Go Round in their surprise 2-2 draw against Elkanemi Warriors.
Franklin Sasere (Sunshine Stars)
Wikki Tourists failed to get a grip of the striker at the Ondo Sports Complex as his goal set the Owena Whales on their way to an impressive 2-1 triumph.
Tasiu Lawal (Katsina United)
Another weekend, a brace for Tasiu Lawal who took his tally for the season to eight goals in the League.
Thomas Zenke (Enyimba)
Zenke was a pain in the backside all afternoon for Rangers and got on the assist board twice during his side’s 3-1 victory in Aba.
