Nigerian footballer, Ikeokwu Patrick died after a brief illness on Saturday night, footballlive.ng can report.
The former Plateau United and former FC Ifeanyi Ubah captain who recently had surgery for appendicitis died, reportedly, from suspected food-poisoning on Friday night.
A source who pleaded anonymity confirmed to footballlive.ng that, “Patrick ate beans with his close friend on Monday Evening and that same evening he complained of stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital.
“The next day, he was discharged by the Doctor who could not see anything wrong with him after several tests were conducted.
“On Friday Patrick started complaining bitterly again and was later rushed to Ola Hospital where he died in the early hours of Saturday,” the source explained.
Meanwhile, former teammates of the player have been paying tribute, describing him as ‘a great leader’.
Rivers United player Wasiu Jimoh, said about the deceased, “We were together in Ifeanyi Ubah, my brother. He was a rare leader to us and I will miss him.”
Patrick Ikeokwu started his footballing career at Plateau United before joining Lobi Stars.
After an impressive 2016 NPFL season with Lobi Stars, he signed for his hometown club FC Ifeanyi Ubah where he later became fans favorite and was made club captain in 2017 season.
The severe appendicitis rupture interrupted his season in 2018 and he was declared surplus to requirement by the club at the beginning of the 2018/2019 season.
