Ajax suffered another set back in their title defence following a stalemate against FC Volendam in the Eredivisie on Thursday.

Mohammed Kudus came off the bench to score the leveler in the 80th minute to earn Ajax a point against the Relegation battlers.

Kudus came off the bench on the hour mark for LB Calvin Bassey, which was a clear tactical decision, and it paid off.

It was the first time Bassey had been subbed off in a league game since joining Ajax in the summer.

The Nigerian made his 16th league appearance for the Eredivisie champions, but has come under criticism from a section of the Club fans and former players.

On Thursday night though, the 23 year-old did impress in the attacking transition, however he couldn’t add to his goal tally already.

Bassey scored his only league goal, so far, against Volendam in the reverse fixture. He was also a handful for the opponents yesterday at the Johan Cruijff Arena as the stats board also show.

He made 2 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 clearance, 1 block, 3 Aerial duels and a shot on target.

However, the visitors drew first blood in the encounter, CB Damon Mirani broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.

But, Kudus leveled to earn Alfred Schreuder’s side a point, their third draw in succession.

The defending champions return to action this weekend in an away League game against Excelsior on Sunday.
