Goals from Samuel Akinibinu in the 9th minute and Sunday Oweyemi in the 70th minute, on Wednesday, gave Bayelsa United a comfortable two nil win over visitors, Osun United in the matchday One encounter of the Nigeria National League (NNL) at the Samson Siasia Stadium, in Yenagoa.
After missing several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, Samuel Akinibinu gave the Restoration Boys the lead in the 9th minute, after connecting from Esobe Chukwudi’s beautiful cross.
The second half resumed with the Omoluabi giants mounting pressure on the Restoration Boys, but the defensive line of Awala Moses and Gabriel Biriduba, curtailed the efforts of Andrew Kabaga and Chinedu Emmanuel.
Substitute, Sunday Oweyemi could have made it two in the 61st minute but his shot was saved by Osun United goalkeeper, Okekem Anderson, but it didn’t take long before Sunday Oweyemi doubled the lead for Bayelsa United to seal the three points for the host.
With the victory, Bayelsa United new top group B1, after Shooting Stars of Ibadan were held to a goalless draw by visiting Abia Comets, while Giant Brillas FC, were drawn bye.
Despite the victory, technical adviser of Bayelsa United Makeme Fekete, said he was not carried away by the win, stressing that his aim of bring Bayelsa United to the elite division, was intact.
On his part, technical adviser of Osun United, Samson Unuanel, attributed the loss to his side’s inability to convert chances in the first half, while Osun United captain, Sadiq Saraj, said the Omoluabi giants, gave a good account of themselves despite going down two nil in Yenagoa.
