Germany’s under-21 national team coach, Stefan Kuntz has disclosed that good attitude and an outstanding personality from Manchester City youngster, Lukas Nmecha made it possible for his switch of national team allegiance to pull through.
Footballlive.ng reports that Kuntz and the entire German squad were very happy, after world football body, FIFA approved a direct switch for Nmecha, starting at youth team level, despite having played in the England side that won the European U19 Championship in 2017.
Nmecha, who has a Nigerian father, scored for England in the semi-final against Czech Republic and final versus Portugal, but he has now been cleared to play solely for Germany at all levels, after FIFA approved for him a once-and-for-all direct switch in national team allegiance.
Kuntz has now taken a closer look at the line of issues and factors that led to Nmecha’s switch and noted that the youngster, who was born in Hamburg 20 years ago to a Nigerian father and German mother, had been impeccable all along and easily mixed with his teammates.
Before his approval by FIFA, Nmecha had been provisionally cap-tied to England, due to his youth national team exertions with The Young Lions, but he has now committed his international days to the land of his birth.
Dramatically, his first game for Germany came against England, as Kuntz gave Nmecha his debut on the hour against The Young Lions at Vitality Stadium on Tuesday, following FIFA’s approval just few hours to kick-off.
Kuntz enthused: ”It was quite an emotional situation. We first heard the good news when we arrived in the stadium.
“Then I told Lukas and the others as we walked out onto the pitch for the inspection. We were all so happy.
“Of course, it wasn’t an easy decision for Lukas to switch allegiance, but that speaks for the atmosphere of our U21s squad and its staff.
“(They) create a great and professional atmosphere in which the boys feel comfortable.
”For the team, who made Lukas feel welcome in such a short space of time, he has helped himself because of his personality. ”
