President of the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA), Sanni Zubair has announced plans to introduce Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the new Nigeria Premier League season.

The news comes just as the new season is about to kick off with the opening match between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan on September 9.

Zubair firmly believes that the implementation of VAR will greatly enhance Refereeing, especially considering that most league matches will now be streamed using newly acquired AI cameras.

By utilizing this advanced technology, referees will have access to additional angles and replays, enabling them to make more accurate and informed decisions on the field.

While discussions regarding VAR are still ongoing, Zubair expressed optimism about its eventual introduction in the new season.

He emphasized the importance of keeping up with technological advancements in football officiating and assured that referees would receive proper training to align with global standards.

As a retired FIFA-badged referee himself, Zubair raised expectations for improved officiating in the NPFL, following a 10-day seminar aimed at enhancing the technical and physical abilities of referees and assistant referees, as well as updates on the laws of the game.
