Nigeria clinched its first U20 WAFU B Championship title after a comfortable 3-1 victory against Benin Republic in the final on Friday.
Having qualified for the U20 AFCON next year as finalists, both Nigeria and Benin Republic talked up their desires to finish the competition on a high.
But, the pendulum would swing eventually in Nigeria’s favor, who made it a resounding win at the Stade General Seyni Kountché.
A brace from Tolulope Ojo and a goal from Ibrahim Muhammad put the Flying Eagles in cruise control before a consolation strike from their opponents.
The Nigerian team led by Ladan Bosso finished the Championship unbeaten in four games (3 wins and 1 draw).
Flying Eagles scored 9 goals and conceded 4 on their way to being crowned new Champions. The team succeeds Ghana, the former holders, who were eliminated in the first round.
Meanwhile, Ghana will also miss out on the chance to defend the U20 AFCON title, which they win for the fifth time in 2021.
The 12-nation tournament will be hosted by Egypt next year, and kicks off 18 February – through to March 12.
All four semi finalists will pick automatic qualification to the World Cup, which holds the same year in Indonesia.
