Lackluster Tunisia suffers defeat; on brink of elimination

Australia defeated Tunisia 1-0 at the Al Janoub Stadium, to end a 12 year wait for a world cup victory.

Tunisia needed a victory after playing a goalless draw with Denmark in their opening game, but it was Australia that started the brightest of the two and got all three points.

The African side started sluggishly and ultimately handed Australia an invite to attack them, one the Socceroos gladly accepted and deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute.

A deflected cross floated in fortuitously for Mitchel Duke who made no mistake and sent a well placed header beyond the outstretched arms of Aymen Dahmen.

Tunisia came out in search of an equaliser but met a very resolute and well drilled Australian Defence led by the pairing of Kye Rowles and Stoke city’s Harry Souttar.

Tunisia were also guilty of complacency in the final third and have now managed to get just a point from two games.

The Carthage Eagles need a win in the final group game, against defending champions Les Bleu to keep any hope of advancing to the next stage.
