Iwobi Makes Case For First 11 Spot On Saturday

Date:

Arsenal attacker, Alex Iwobi is staking a solid claim for a place in Nigeria’s starting 11 for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, footballlive.ng can report.

After two days of training for the crunch tie at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Iwobi showed semblances of his displays against Qarabag in the Europa League and in the last English Premier League clash with Fulham.

Iwobi’s skill, passing and mobility received cheers from the crowd at the training pitch at the match venue.

Iwobi wowed the fans when he scored one of the standout goals of the evening, with a sweet lob over the goalkeeper, and the crowd went wild with cheers for The Gunners’ former under-21 team skipper.

At the end of the session, fans thronged to take selfies with Iwobi, in the aftermath of which Eagles tactician, Gernot Rohr expressed happiness in having the Arsenal star and Levante of Spain new boy, Moses Simon back to the Nigerian national team.

Simon missed out of the World Cup party due to injury and the winger was not listed for the game at Seychelles, for which Iwobi was also not available due to an injury.

“There is joy in my heart for the return of Alex Iwobi to the team. He has been performing very well for Arsenal in the English Premier League.

“It is (also) wonderful that Moses Simon recovered following his injury before the World Cup.

“We have 24 players available for selection. Only 18 will be listed for the game on Saturday. 11 will start.

“We will see in the training session who are fittest ones to play and start the game,” Rohr acknowledged.
