The Nigeria Premier Football League made a much anticipated return on Sunday, as Akwa United recorded a shock 2-0 loss to newly promoted side, Bendel Insurance on the opening day of the new season at the Nest of Champion in Uyo.
Insurance were making a return to the top flight of Nigerian football after three years, and they wasted no time in making a statement of intent.
They beat the favorites, Akwa United, at home via goals from Imade Osehenkhoe (39′) and the second goal coming from the boot of Ismael Seriki (41′), as he turned home from a corner kick.
Insurance held things tight and ensured no goals were conceded as they wrapped up an unlikely victory away from home in the top flight for the first time in more than three years.
The fixture was the only match played in week one of the new season, with the remaining fixtures to be played a week later.
