Mid-table Aswan fought hard and held on to their early lead to secure a stunning victory against Zamalek in their Egypt Premier League clash on Monday.

A first half lead courtesy a Mohamed Abdel Ghani own goal in the 4th minute and a stoppage time strike from Leonardo Kamone (45+2′) handed Aswan the initiative.

Despite their best effort, Zamalek couldn’t overturn the scoreline although they pulled one goal back in the 56th minute.

Hossam Abdelmaguid halved the deficit, but the holders couldn’t find the crucial ball to at least earn themselves a point at the Aswan Stadium.

The hosts were solid defensively and their Nigerian Midfielder, Raphael Ayagwa was at the heart of it.

Ayagwa was on for the entire duration of the game and though he picked up a caution in the early minutes, he held his own.

Formerly of Lobi Stars, the 24 year-old joined Aswan as a free Agent in the summer and has made 8 appearances so far in his debut campaign.

The win is the first for El Azrq over the White Knights since 2020, having lost back to back league games and a Cup fixture in that period.

Meanwhile, Aswan jump to 7th in the standings, while Zamalek slip down to second place following Al Ahly’s 3-0 win over Pyramids.
