A stoppage time winner against Sierra Leone by Kelechi Iheanacho sealed all three points for Nigeria and sends the team through to the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria seal a nervy 3-2 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium on Sunday to also go top of Group A and end Sierra Leone’s hopes of reaching the Cup of Nations next year.

The Leone Stars made showed resilience and pushed all the way, but they were initially undone in the first half, a Victor Osimhen brace (19′, 32′) saw them chasing the game.

Before the break Mohamed Bundu (41′) halve the deficit; with a ferocious volley, to breathe some life into the contest.

Weary and struggling to cope on in the harsh Monrovia weather and a horrendous playing Surface, the Nigerian players were tiring out and cautious – Osimhen was eventually subbed off as precaution after what appeared like a hamstring.

In the second half, the Super Eagles couldn’t make their chances count and were as wasteful yet again as they were in the first half.

Eventually, Sierra Leone got their equalizer, and it was 23 year-old FC Crotone forward, Augustus Kargbo who smashed home from outside the box in the 84th minute.

Yet, John Keister’s side weren’t out of the woods and he threw bodies upfront, searching for the winner, a costly decision.

The Super Eagles broke the Sierra Leone lines and Zaidu Sanusi sprinted beating his marker before selling the goalkeeper a dummy. He crossed the ball low and in perfect onto the path of substitute Kelechi Iheanacho who only had to tap in for the win.

Victory on the day means the Super Eagles are through to the 2024 AFCON finals and with a game to spare.
