Leicester City coach, Brendan Rodgers has suggested that the club’s Nigerian-born attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho will have to adapt to playing under different tactics and in various positions for him to regain his lost shade of relevance in the team, footballlive.ng reports.
Iheanacho has found the going tough at King Power Stadium, since his arrival two years ago from Manchester City, but Rodgers has now offered him an escape route to his woes.
Such is the comfort coming from the former Liverpool and Celtic gaffer, that Iheanacho might be headed for a breath of fresh and lease of new life with The Foxes, once he can adjust to different tactics in the team.
Iheanacho was an unused substitute in Leicester’s 3-1 victory over Fulham last Saturday, but Rodgers has now hinted that the 22-year-old star could get chances to feature more, albeit in a ‘diamond’ system.
However, Rodgers’ verdict brings up another point about Iheanacho’s recent woes, as the gaffer believes the lad is a top striker, but will have to learn how to play down the side, as a winger or wing-back.
Iheanacho has been known since his days in the Flying Eagles’ squad of the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand to show laziness in roles through the middle, yet finds iot tough to exert pressure as an arrow head, thereby raising suggestions that he is better behind the top striker.
Rodgers expatiated: “You can maybe shuffle them about and slide them around to make it work – but he’s a number nine and that’s it.
“We already have a good number nine. So he’s got a fight to get ahead, but there’s maybe another system to make it work, like a diamond.”
