Kwara United goalkeeper, Dele Aiyenugba played against his son Daniel, in a pre-season friendly against Beyond Limits.

Aiyenugba Snr., guarded the goal for the Afonja Warriors, while his son stood between the posts for the feeders team of Remo Stars.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw after regular time, with the lower league team securing a 3-2 victory in the penalty shootout.

After the game, the two-time CAF Champions League winner was overwhelmed by the historic feat of sharing the pitch with his son and couldn’t hide his pride and admiration for Daniel, who is also following in his footsteps.

Speaking to FL, the former Enyimba goalie revealed that he once vowed not to allow any of his kids to play as a goalkeeper because of how physically and mentally tough playing the position is.

“It’s a thing of joy, You are your son, playing on the same pitch and doing the same thing at the same time. It’s a great thing for me,” Dele Aiyenugba Snr. stressed.

“I vowed that none of my children would be a goalkeeper because I know how stressful it is. I know how strong mentally you need to be to undo criticism, to undo mistakes.

“So, I came back from a break. We were training together as normal players when they sent me a video. I said, Daniel, what happened? He said I’m going to be a goalkeeper.

“I gave him my blessing. I said, ‘look, you need to be tough. It’s a tough place. It’s a tough position.’ He was ready for it and that’s how it started and we have been going every day.”
