I had the bad luck of the Number 9 at Chelsea – Abraham

The number 9 jersey at Chelsea is cursed.

This is the superstition and it is one that former Blues Tammy Abraham admits he faced and overcame in his stint as the team’s top striker.

Abraham left Chelsea and penned a five-year deal with AS Roma where he has also taken up the number 9 jersey.
Both clubs agreed a €40 million fee for the 23 year-old who joins the Giallorossi hoping to continue his development as he replaces Edin Dzeko as the new number 9.
In his two seasons the England international made 56 league appearances and scored 21 goals.
He won the Champions League and the Super Cup with the club but perhaps his biggest achievement is defying the odds of the number 9 shirt.
In his first interview as a AS Roma player, speaking on his readiness to take on the role as top striker Abraham said:
“I’m always ready; in football you always have to be ready.
“The same thing I had to deal with at Chelsea; I had the bad luck of the number 9 at Chelsea and I proved a lot of people wrong, so here I can’t wait.
“It’s massive to be the number 9 at this club and I just can’t wait to get started and to help the team.”
He also described the strong interests shown by the club for his services as a crucial to his decision to move from Chelsea where he spent 12 years.
“I think you can sense when a club really want you, Roma soon as they said they were interested, they rung my phone everyday, spoke to my agent everyday.
“Like I said, I’ve known a lot about Roma in the past and I have had a few teammates from Chelsea who’ve also played for Roma, so they told me it’s a great club and I was expecting good things and as soon as I got here. It has been good since I’ve been here.”
