Cristiano Ronaldo’s dreams of winning his sixth UEFA Champions League failed to materialize after Juventus got kicked out of the competition by Ajax earlier this week.
The Portuguese star opened the scoring at the Juventus stadium in the 27th minute to give his side the advantage. But goals from Donny Van der Beek and Matthijs de Ligt canceled out the hosts’ lead to send Ajax through to their first semi-final since 1997.
Ronaldo was clearly devastated at full-time as he headed straight for the tunnel and his mother Dolores Aveiro admits the 34-year-old was gutted.
“He came to me after the match with his head down”
“He was sad as he wanted to go to the final. He said to me ‘I tried hard, but I cannot do miracles, mom, I’m sorry. Life goes on”, said Maria Dolores Aveiro
The Turin club has dominated Italian football, winning Serie A for the last seven seasons, and their signing of five-times World Player of the Year Ronaldo in July was interpreted as a bold statement of their European intentions.
But those dreams were left in tatters after Juventus were beaten 2-1 at home in their quarter-final second leg on Tuesday, going out 3-2 on aggregate.
