Grimsby Town FC have knocked out Southampton from the FA Cup following Wednesday’s 2-1 victory at St. Mary’s.

Thirty-one year-old Gavan Holohan was the hero for Grimsby Town, both his goals came from the penalty spot.

A first half stoppage time (45+1′) penalty broke the deadlock to give the third tier side a shock lead.

In the 50th minute Holohan converted another penalty to double his tally and stretch the visitor’s lead before the bewildered home fans.

Southampton responded eventually, as captain James Ward-Prowse came off the bench and notched the assist six minutes later for Duje Caleta-Car’s goal in the 65th minute.

Joe Aribo also got minutes, introduced off the bench for the quarter-final match, and in his appearance in the competition this season.

But, Aribo couldn’t impact the game and neither could another substitute, Ruben Selles’ fourth allotment off the bench, Theo Walcott, who thought he had leveled (80′) for his side, but the goal was chalked off for offside by VAR.

Meanwhile, Paul Onuachu was not named in the 20-man squad for the Cup game, but he was also not listed as an injury casualty.

Southampton will now turn their attention to relegation survival battle in the PL when on Saturday they host Leicester City.
