Gong benched as Excelsior down Vitesse

Date:

Exciting winger Hilary Gong was benched for the full match duration as Vitesse Arnhem lost 2-0 to Excelsior Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.

Hilary Gong hasn’t played frequently in the first team of Vitesse Arnhem following his Summer switch from AS Trencin.

He wasn’t considered good enough for action by his team.

The hosts were the better side from the start and hit the post after half an hour through Jerdy Schouten before Jurgen Mattheij had a goal disallowed for offside. Eventually, Excelsior found their opener in the 40th minute when a free-kick was diverted past his own goalkeeper by Max Clark.

Vitesse came out stronger in the second half but the post denied Bryan Linssen before Sonny Stevens made a good save to deny Oussama Darfalou’s header.

In the 70th minute, Excelsior sealed their victory when Mattheij fired past Eduardo from outside the box.
