Ghana needs a win against Nigeria after Disastrous AFCON – Nii Lamptey

Former Ghana player Nii Odartey Lamptey has urged the Black Stars to bounce back from their “disastrous” 2021 AFCON outing with a win against Nigeria in World Cup qualifier in Kumasi.

Ghana were knocked out in the group stage of the AFCON in Cameroon following a final group match defeat to a lowly Comoros, but Lamptey who earned 38 caps for the Black Stars believes the team can redeem their image with picking a ticket to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Black Stars host Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Friday, in the first leg of the World Cup playoffs and four days later in the second-leg will battle their West African neighbors in Abuja.
Speaking on VOA’s Sunny Side of Sports, the former Midfielder who is now a Coach said the entire Ghana will also have to get behind their team.
‘We all know the team’s performance at the AFCON in Cameroon was disastrous.’ said Nii Lamptey.
‘However, we need to look forward now and though this team is also a blend of the new and old, they need to raise their levels.
‘I think getting to play Nigeria at this stage is a big test, but we now need the entire nation to get behind our players in Kumasi and pray for them. We must win.’
