Gateway United FC picked first away point in a hard fought stalemate against Dynamite Force FC in the 2018/2019 Nigeria National League week 2 encounter at University of Edo football pitch, Iyamho.
Both teams tried to find their rhythms in first fifteen minutes, and In the 32nd minute, Gateway United goalkeeper Adamu Azeez had to put his body on the line for a double tackle outside his box to clear the ball out of danger from the edge of the box.
The away team then grew into the game and imposed its style of tiki tika football in the latter stages of the first half.
The host team nearly drew the first blood in the 60th minute with a thunderous shot that hit the cross bar.
The contest thereafter became tensed as both teams frantically went in search of a lead. Akeem Busari tutored side went on a swift counter with Godspower Igbah nodding the ball onto the path of Abdul-Azeez Salam who smashed the ball past Dynamite goalie Ohaji Chinedu but the referee controversially overruled it for offside.
In the dying minutes, Dynamite forward Salifu Haruna also got the ball into the net with a flying header from an offside position which was sighted by the assistant referee and overruled.
The referee decision sparked reactions which saw a fan jumped onto the pitch to challenge the lineswoman but a few policemen around were able to restore normalcy.
The encounter snowballed into a tension soaked affair. However, Gateway United FC ensured that the spoils were shared in a goalless stalemate.
Gateway United will now shift focus on the Ogun FA Cup semi-final tie against Nilayo FC at Gateway Int’l stadium, Ilaro on Wednesday 24th April, 2019.
