Former Super Eagles Forward Weighs in on Gernot Rohr’s Contract Extension

    Former Super Eagles attacker Benedict Akwuegbu has backed head coach Gernot Rohr to get a new deal with the Nigeria Football Federation Federation.

    Rohr arrived in 2016 and has current deal expires in June 2020 and the Franco-German is yet to be offered a new deal by the NFF.

     

    He led Nigeria to the 2018 world cup and the 2019 African cup of nation, finishing third in the latter.

     

    While the future of the 66 year-old has dominated topic of discussions in the media, but Akwuegbu has backed Rohr to get a new contract.

     

    The former Forward insists the Coach deserves a contract extension because he has done a ‘good job’.

     

    “If you ask me, Rohr has done well so far and deserves to get his contract extended”, Akwuegbu told the media.

     

    “He’s brought young players to the national team. He selects players purely on merit and is not sentimental in his invitation of players to the Super Eagles.

     

    “Besides, he’s brought flair and balance to the team within his short tenure so far. He’s a typical German trainer, direct on his job.

     

    “He’s just three years on the job and you can see how the Eagles play. They may not have won the Nations Cup, but he has laid a foundation for bigger positive results.

     

    “Yes, this team of young players has the potential to win the AFCON anytime soon.

     

    “Egypt 2019 was his first AFCON and he won bronze, same way Westerhof won silver in his first Nations Cup in Algeria 1990.”
