Former Celtic striker John Hartson has recommended that Rangers sign their former player Joe Aribo from Southampton if the chance presented itself.

Aribo has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League after moving from Rangers to Southampton during the summer transfer window for a fee of £6 million.

Appearing for The Saints 26 times so far this season, and having scored 2 goals, the Nigerian midfielder has played under 3 different managers at the club this season alone.

Southampton have been unstable and are now headed to play Championship football for next season – though there are still two matches left to play in the season.

Speaking via Football Scotland on Go Radio, Hartson stated: “I’d take him back in a heartbeat if the opportunity was there, but how would it work financially?

“Southampton will want some of the fees back if he’s out of the picture, meanwhile Michael Beale wants to build his own team. And if they sign Malik Tillman?

“If he Aribo became available I’d take him. He knows the club and did well so why not. But it will depend on wages and fees.”

Aribo had an impressive stint with Rangers, propelling them to a league championship in the 2020/2021 campaign, capturing a Scottish Cup, and playing a fundamental role in Rangers’ journey to the Europa League final in his last season there.
