For 90minutes Nigerians collectively held their breath as the Flying Eagles battled their way to causing a major upset at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

In a nerve-racking round of 16 match and before a packed Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, Nigeria dealt Argentina a major blow, ending the host Nation’s hopes of a title defence of the U20 World Cup.

Clearly the underdogs heading into the game, Ladan Bosso led a team that finished third in its group – from first position. Scored only three goals and had history stacked against it (2-0).

Although Bosso had analyzed how the team was built on strength, stamina and speed of players, Concentration and Grit seem to be their biggest assets.

They lacked it against Brazil and were punished for it, but against Javier Mascherano’s Los Cebollitas, who had conceded just once and had breezed through three games with a haul of 13 goals scored, Bosso played simple Checkers.

His emphasis pre-tournament had always been on doing the needful; be effective and win rather than focus on aesthetics and struggle.

He told brila.net, the team was behind schedule on preparation for the tournament, and the last resort was to seek and stick with only the necessities.

A huge result for Nigeria on Wednesday and as he patted his younger opposite number, after the final whistle, the focus will quickly shift to the Quarter-final opponent.

This is a situation that the 55 year-old Coach is all too familiar with, being he has just equalled his previous best finish at the World Cup.

Back in 2007, the Flying Eagles were eliminated in the last 8, Bosso’s team held their own until extra-time, but capitulated 4-0 to Chile.

The next fixture poses a bigger test, and now perhaps more than before Bosso needs to be a strategist, and his doubters, less antagonistic.
