FIFA U20 World Cup: Italy will Determine Nigeria’s Fate

Italy will pose a big problem for Nigeria when the teams face off in their second group match at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Both teams won their opening games; Nigeria beat Dominican Republic 2-1 and Italy triumphed 3-2 over Brazil, but the manner of the victories – team performances – automatically stacks the odds against Nigeria.

This by no means suggests the Flying Eagles will be tamed, however, the Europeans showed the physicality and flair akin to South American and African teams.

Against Brazil, Gli Azzurrini’s dominated play; controlled the tempo, out ran and their pressing was effective.

The stats were quite similar to Nigeria’s – albeit the two-time runners up played against a less formidable opponent.

Players to watch out for:

Cesare Casadei

The Azzurrini captain registered 7 attempts on goal and scored twice including one from the penalty spot.

Mattai Zanotti

The Inter Milan defender was effective in breaking play and solid all round in defending.

Tommaso Baldanzi

A fine midfield maestro who plays as Italy’s regista. He was very involved in the transition play.

Italy and Nigeria will go head to head again on May 24; for only the second time at this level.

The first meeting between the teams ended in a 2-0 victory for the Europeans back in 1987.
