Europa Conference League: Lawal bags brace in Neftci Baku six-goal thriller


Yusuf Lawal scored a brace in a dramatic six-goal thriller between Neftci Baku and Maccabi Haifa in the Europa Conference League first-leg match at the Bakcell Arena on Thursday.

Lawal scored a leveler and gave his team the lead in a roller coaster game that also saw the hosts reduced to 10 men.
The Nigerian wide man cancelled out Omer Atzili’s 9th minute opener with a 50th minute equalizer.
He followed up that strike with his second in the 66th minute before teammate Emin Makhmudov extended the lead by two in the 72nd minute.
However, after the hosts lost a man, Ismayil Zulfugarli picking up a second yellow with 13 minutes on the clock.
That one man advantage counted for Maccabi Haifa and they pulled one back almost immediately through Tjarron Chery.
Late in additional time, the all-important equalizer was scored, the 33 year-old Suriname international Chery broke the hearts of the home fans with brace, in the sixth minute of added time.
They tie will be decided in the second-leg at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa on August 26.
