Victor Ezeji has expressed frustration with the display of Nigerian teams that crashed out in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Nigerian champions, Enyimba were eliminated from the CAF CL following the 4-3 aggregate outcome against Al Ahly Benghazi.

In the other game, Remo Stars, despite winning on the night, lost 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate result against Medeama SC.

Reacting to the outcome of the games, Ezeji labelled the situation as shameful and insists that he had expectations of Enyimba, as champions of the Nigerian Premier League.

“Well, it’s a shame. It’s something that has been a recurring decimal. We fail to take cognizance of it, it has happened again. We’ll start crying today and tomorrow, next season, it will happen again. Yeah, we can’t remember the last time the Nigerian club played in the CAF Champions league group stage.

“It has been a very, very long while. There are so many things that needs to be taken care of, which we have not done.”

“These things will continue to happen. It is not a good one for us. You can’t be doing the same thing over and over and be expecting a different result.

“I’m not surprised. It’s just that for the first time with the result Insurance pulled, I was believing that, oh, for a very long while we’ll go into the second round. 100% intact, all our teams, two in the CAF Champions League, two in the CAF Confederation Cup, going into the second round of the playoffs.”

“Unfortunately, the two that we thought might even do better, are the ones that got dumped out. It’s really sad. It’s really really sad and a shame to Nigerian football.”

Rivers United, who made it up to the quarter final of last season’s Confederation Cup, will play Etoile Filante in the second qualifying round, while Insurance will play Berkane in a bid to make it to the group stages of the competition.
