It might prove an emotional night for Ajax CB, Calvin Bassey when they host Rangers in the UEFA Champions League tonight at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam.

Barely four months ago, Bassey had won the Scottish Cup and reached the final of the Europa League with Rangers, before his move to Amsterdam.

The 22 year-old like he was with the Gers has been a regular for Ajax and will expect to get his UCL debut, tonight.

Ajax go into Wednesday’s game on the back of their 4-0 victory against Cambuur, a game where Bassey for an assist.

In contrast, last weekend’s League fixture for Rangers was the first installment of the Old Firm derby this season.

A high intensity game on the road and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men suffered a heavy 4-0 bashing against Celtic.

Meanwhile, Bassey’s influence with his new team is growing, Ajax have not only won all three league games he has featured in, but they’ve also kept clean sheets.

The 22 year-old has also earned praise from Ajax legend, Frank De Boer ahead of Wednesday’s game.

“I’ve been really impressed by Bassey,” De Boer said.

“He was unlucky to be sent-off in the Super Cup. He started the game well and we have already had the people who thought he was just a big lump, charging around kicking people, changing their opinions.

“He gives Ajax strength and speed and on the ball he’s alright. Of course he can still improve on that part of his game but I think he showed in the last few games that he’s undroppable. Together with Jurrien Timber, they make a great couple in defence.”
