Eguavoen Apologizes for Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup fiasco

Former Super Eagles head Coach, Austin Eguavoen has apologized for the team’s failure to secure qualification for the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Eguavoen said although painful, the country has to move on from the disappointment.

Nigeria missed out on this year’s tournament after failing to beat Ghana over two legs, which saw the latter pick up the ticket via away goals rule – it ended 1-1 on aggregate.

The 57 year-old, who is now the Nigerian FA’s technical director, said he feels bad every time he listens to conversations about the World Cup, because he feels personally responsible for the team’s failure to qualify.

‘I failed to take the country to the world tournament, when I had the opportunity to; I was trusted with the responsibility.

‘For this reason, I have only been able to watch very little of the games as it makes me even sadder.

‘Well as head of the technical department, I will just have to start planning now and make sure that Nigeria gets to the next world cup,” he said on Brila FM’s Big Interview show.
