Cyriel Dessers was in the thick of things as Rangers managed to avoid a potential upset in the League Cup by making a comeback against Championship team Morton, securing a 2-1 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.

Morton took the lead in the 53rd minute when their captain, Grant Gillespie, converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review which saw Dessers bring down a man just in the penalty box.

However, Rangers quickly responded on the other end, as the Nigerian equalized from the penalty spot after another VAR intervention in the 60th minute.

The turning point in the match came in the 68th minute when substitute Danilo scored, giving Rangers the lead off an assist from Dessers.

The hard-fought victory allowed Rangers to progress to the next round of the competition.

The team will now have to shift their focus to the Champions League first-leg play-off match against PSV Eindhoven scheduled for Tuesday night at Ibrox.
