Delta Force strengthened their bid to qualify for the season ending Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Super Six with a 2-1 win over Akwa United at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Thursday.

Despite the loss, the Promise Keepers qualified for the playoffs.

It was expected to be a game that will thrill fans and it lived up to expectations.

Delta Force went in front lead through Christian Ekong’s goal seven minutes before the interval. Anayo Iwuala provided the assist.

One minute later, Akwa keeper Olorunleke Ojo prevented the home team from extending their lead with a double save.

A penalty kick was awarded to Delta Force in the 48the minute. Christian Ekong was brought down in the box.

Olorunleke Ojo punched away Ekong’s spot kick, only for Anayo Iwuala to prod home the follow-up.

The Promise Keepers threw bodies forward in an attempt to reduce the deficit.

An inch-perfect pass from Ndifreke Effiong was put to the path of Etboy Akpan who failed to direct his shot on target.

The visitors eventually had their own spot kick after Godspower Aniefiok was tripped in the box.

Mfon Udoh scored from the spot for Akwa United.

In the 85th minute, the centre referee issued a verbal warning to Akwa’s bench and reserve player Markson Ojobo was sent off.

Delta Force were down to 10 men after the referee deemed Otukhe’s challenge on Dennis Nya dangerous.

A fierce shot by Akwa striker Mfon Udoh was fumbled by Delta keeper Victor Sochima but the homers cleared their lines.
