Cyriel Dessers, on his return from injury, came off the bench to hand Cremonese a lifeline, but it was ultimately not enough to earn his club a point in their Serie A match away at Sassuolo.

Dessers was introduced at half-time, replacing Ghanaian forward Felix Afena Gyan, with Cremonese trailing 2-0.

The forward got on the score sheet for the first time in the 62nd minute, when he slotted past Andrea Consigli by pouncing on a Martin Erlic’s wayward header to halve the deficit.

Cyriel Dessers would have argued that he had forced a draw in the match and would be taking a point in the match after he scored his second on the night, rounding goalkeeper Consigli and slotted a cool finish into the back of the net in the 83rd minute.

But it was not meant to be as Nedim Bajrami volleyed home just in the second minute of stoppage time to break the heart of the away fans.

Another Nigerian, David Okereke started the match against Sassuolo but he struggled to have an effect on the game and was substituted for Cristian Buonaiuto.
