Oluwasemilogo Ajayi got his chance to make an impression and get quality game time, on Tuesday, in the FA Cup Third round replay between West Brom and Chesterfield at the Hawthorns.
Ajayi has been on the road to full reintegration into the first XI after a nasty injury left him out for 17 round of matches since last September.
But since his return, the 29 year-old has not completed 90 minutes in the league and his place, prior, as a starter was now no longer guaranteed because head coach Carlos Coberan preferred the Dara O’Shea and Erik Pieters pairing.
However, the Nigerian CB has accepted his role off bench and embraced the challenge of fighting for his place.
On Tuesday night, it was a very straight forward game for the hosts, and Ajayi showed composure, enough to earn him good reviews as West Brom marched on in the competition.
A goal in the first half and two more eight minutes after the restart from the Championship side rattled the non-League side opponents.
Before the blast of the final whistle Chesterfield had conceded one more, but were long resigned to their fate.
Meanwhile, the Baggies will proceed to the round of 32 where they’ll face Bristol City.
But later this weekend, West Brom will return to the Championship and they’ll battle for points against league Leaders, Burnley.
