Samuel Chukwueze could return to Villarreal early enough for the first Pre season friendly against West Brom and likely face Nigerian teammate Moses Simon in the second friendly should the Eagles AFCON campaign end early.
Chukwueze who is currently on international duty with Nigeria, has only made one appearance in the competition – the June 22 game against Burundi.
The youngster’s inclusion in the 23-man squad came as exciting news following a breakthrough season last term in La Liga.
However, the pre tournament hype that greeted the whizz-kid’s inclusion is quietly leading to a deafening silence no thanks to the reluctance of head Coach Gernot Rohr’s refusal to hand him game time.
This could prompt the player’s early return to the Ciudad Deportiva if he opts not to observe the traditional one-week rest period before resuming with the club.
Villarreal published a statement on its official website about the club’s pre season resumption date and first set of friendlies.
Part of the statement read:
Players will return to the Yellows from 5th to 7th July to undergo medical tests. However, pre-season will not officially start until Monday 8th July, when the first training session at the Villarreal CF Training Ground (Ciudad Deportiva) will take place (time TBC).
West Bromwich Albion and Levante, first two opponents in pre-season
Furthermore, Villarreal have confirmed the first two pre-season opponents. The first friendly will be on Saturday 13th July against West Bromwich Albion at the Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort (7pm CEST), while the second match will be against Levante UD on Saturday 20th July at Parador El Saler (7:30pm CEST).
