It was a disappointing start to the CAF Women’s Champions League campaign for Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens, who lost 2-1 against current holders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

A Lelona Daweti double – a goal in either half – gave the South African side a comfortable, despite Bayelsa Queens doing all the playing.

Eventually, Mary-Magdalene Anjor halved the deficit, but it wasn’t enough to save the WAFU Zone B champions on the night.

Bayelsa Queens were on the front foot and created more chances, but they were poor converting those opportunities, even with Sabastine Flourish leading the lines for the Nigerian women football league champions.

The Prosperity Queens will look to beat Wadi Degla of Egypt and TP Mazembe to ensure passage thought to the CAF Women’s Champions League knock out phase.
